"They say that when a child is born," His smooth voice rang through my thoughts. "When a child is born for a brief amount of time they still remember the life they lived before this one. That they are pure and full of innocence for that brief window in their lives. Untainted. Until it is lost in the darkness of this world, in the cruelty that people are capable of. Then it's gone."

As he spoke the eyes on the tiny infant opened and for the briefest of second I swore she focused on me alone. As soon as the moment happened it was over and she began to cry, drawing the attention of one of the nurses.

"I believe that we somehow keep that innocence." He continued softly. "When I see people.. People like us.. Come in here with all the injuries they inflict on themselves.. I can still see that innocence. That untainted part of a person that doesn't understand pain. That doesn't understand the feeling they're having. I see it in their eyes."

I met his unfaltering gaze, his words flowing through my mind like velvet. His ice blue eyes were carefully masking his emotions. A familiar trick, hiding emotions. I would know as I've done it for most of my life.

"I don't know what problems she has. What problems you have. Just like you don't know mine. And I'm not going to ask about them just like you're not going to ask about mine. But I am going to say this: rediscovering happiness is a long battle. Sometimes it feels like you're on a winding path that's leading nowhere, or like you're walking through murky water and you don't know when you're going to reach dry land. But use that water to your advantage. Drown your demons." He spoke in an even tone but his words carried enough power behind them to make me shrink back a little. He wasn't scaring me it was just a little intimidating to be spoken to so bluntly with a stranger.

"What if they know how to swim?" I whispered as his eyes wandered over the spread of cots through the window. He inclined his head towards me and looked me straight in the eyes.

"Then set them on fire."

He turned on his heel and paced down the corridor leaving me alone. His words resonated within me. 'Set them on fire.' I was reminded of the fire that her eyes once held and I was filled with steely determination.
